A tiny domino can knock over another domino twice its size, and that one knocks over one twice its size again. Nine dominoes later, you have toppled a skyscraper. Extraordinary results work the same way.
This is The ONE Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan, the book built on one question: what is the one thing you can do, such that by doing it, everything else becomes easier or unnecessary?
The Six Lies
The authors start by destroying the lies that keep us scattered. First lie: everything matters equally. It does not. A few things matter far more than the rest, and the rest is mostly noise. Second lie: multitasking. Switching between tasks is not doing more, it is doing everything badly. Third lie: a disciplined life.
You do not need discipline in everything, only in the one habit that matters. Fourth lie: willpower is always on will call. Willpower is a depleting resource, so do not waste it on small decisions. Fifth lie: a balanced life. Balance is a myth for anyone chasing extraordinary results, because extraordinary requires going all in on one thing. Sixth lie: big is bad. Big goals are not riskier, they are just more honest about what it takes.
The Two-Part Question
Once the lies are gone, the tool appears: the Focusing Question. Not what should I do, but the two part version. What is the ONE Thing I can do, such that by doing it, everything else becomes easier or unnecessary?
The first half finds your biggest lever. The second half turns it into a priority that simplifies everything downstream.
Ask It at Every Scale
The focusing question works at every scale. For your life, it is about purpose: what is the one thing that gives everything else meaning? For the year, it is your one big goal. For the week, the one thing that must get done.
For today, the one task that moves the needle. And for right now, the single most important thing in this moment. One question, five scopes, all pointing at the same target.
The Success Habit
Then comes the success habit. Extraordinary people do the one thing, they do it for a set time block, and they do it every single day. Keller's version is a four hour block every morning before anything else.
The block is sacred. No phone, no meetings, no emergencies, no exceptions. If it is truly the one thing, everything else can wait.
What It Takes
The three commitments that hold it together: adopt the mindset of someone pursuing mastery, practice your one thing relentlessly, and never lose sight of your purpose.
The Focus Thieves
And beware the four thieves that steal your focus. The inability to say no, which lets everyone else run your day. A culture of fear, which punishes focus and celebrates busyness.
Bad habits, which quietly eat your time blocks. And technology, which is a wonderful servant and a terrible master.
The Deeper Truth
The deeper truth underneath all of it: extraordinary results are not about doing more. They are about doing less, on purpose, for long enough that the dominoes start to fall. The people who change the world are the ones who figured out their one thing and refused to let it go.
The ONE Thing Routine
So ask yourself the question right now. What is the ONE thing you can do, such that by doing it, everything else becomes easier or unnecessary? Write it down.
Time block it. Protect it. And let the dominoes fall.
